Northern Tasmanian body building champion, Brett Tulk, of Launceston, has signed a sponsorship deal with Weider, the international weight training, and supplement company.

Weider will fly Tulk to Sydney in June for the Weider Super Bowl, a national competition. The First prize is 10 days in California , two tickets to Mr Olympia and a photo session with Joe Weider, the founder of the company.

Tulk will train for the Junior Mr Australia titles in Sydney in September and success there will place him in good stead for the World Junior Championships in October.

Launceston's Brett Tulk was named triple overall, over-80kg and junior champion at the Northern Bodybuilding Championships at the Princess Theatre yesterday.

Tulk, 19, 87kg, had battle on his hands in the over-80kg division posing against former Mr Tasmania Chris Chugg and Bradyn Muir, both of Hobart.

However, Tulk was clearly the overall body builder of the meet when ranged against the under 70kg winner Greg Davies, and under-80kg champion Paul Sparks, all three training at Launceston's Muscle World Gymnasium. Tulk will now begin serious training for the Australian body building championships in Sydney in September.

MIGHTIEST MUSCLES TO GO ON DISPLAY

Brett Tulk is one major reason why there will be a lack of male competitors in the Weider Northern Tasmanian body building championships in Launceston tomorrow. Put simply, there are several body builders around the State who don't wish to test their physiques on the Princess Theatre stage at 2pm against the 89kg of sculpted muscle mass packed into the 168cm frame that is Tulk's.

Tulk, 19 of Launceston, will be a feature of the titles, the first ever body building championships in Northern Tasmanian and the State's first International Federation of Body Building event, the sport's major world organisation. The highlight tomorrow will be the posing of current professional Mr World Mike Christian, a mammoth 185cm, 120kg black American body builder from California . At a exhibition in Melbourne this week, Christian brought a crowd of thousands to their feet, cheering.

“He's one of the biggest men in the world,” Tulk said.
“It will be a big surprise to everyone to actually see how big he is. It's the first time anyone of his standard has come to Tasmania .”

However it is Tulk who will compete with former Mr Tasmania Chris Chugg, of Hobart, and Launceston's Paul Sparks for the heavyweight and junior crowns respectively. “I've been body building seriously for 21/2-3 years,” Tulk said. “I'd played about with it before then. At Brooks High School I entered the Tasmanian clean and jerk championships and won that, and then stated body building.”

The sports of Olympic weightlifting and body building are related, but the inspiration of cult hero Arnold Schwarzenegger saw Tulk fist opt for the latter and now concentrate upon it to the extent that he has decide to defer his physical education course the TSIT for tow years to train.

“It's a sport with a lot of extrinsic motivation,” Tulk said.
“I can look in a mirror and see the improvement in myself.”
“I used to run (a Northern Tasmanian representative in the 100, 200 and 400m) and I ‘d run a good time and go home and think, ‘What have I got to show for it'.”

Tulk's ambitions are as eye catching as his physique, with a goal of a Mr Australia title before his 21 st birthday.
